Detlef Stammer, Anny Cazenave
R2,009 Discovery Miles 20 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Satellite remote sensing, in particular by radar altimetry, is a crucial technique for observations of the ocean surface and of many aspects of land surfaces, and of paramount importance for climate and environmental studies. This book provides a state-of-the-art overview of the satellite altimetry techniques and related missions, and reviews the most-up-to date applications to ocean dynamics and sea level. It also discusses related space-based observations of the ocean surface and of the marine geoid, as well as applications of satellite altimetry to the cryosphere and land surface waters; operational oceanography and its applications to navigation, fishing and defense.

Kusumita Arora; Edited by Harsh K Gupta; Edited by (board members) Anny Cazenave, Eric Robert Engdahl, Rainer Kind, …
R14,280 Discovery Miles 142 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The past few decades have witnessed the growth of the Earth Sciences in the pursuit of knowledge and understanding of the planet that we live on. This development addresses the challenging endeavor to enrich human lives with the bounties of Nature as well as to preserve the planet for the generations to come. Solid Earth Geophysics aspires to define and quantify the internal structure and processes of the Earth in terms of the principles of physics and forms the intrinsic framework, which other allied disciplines utilize for more specific investigations.

The first edition of the Encyclopedia of Solid Earth Geophysics was published in 1989 by Van Nostrand Reinhold publishing company. More than two decades later, this new volume, edited by Prof. Harsh K. Gupta, represents a thoroughly revised and expanded reference work. It brings together more than 200 articles covering established and new concepts of Geophysics across the various sub-disciplines such as Gravity, Geodesy, Geomagnetism, Seismology, Seismics, Deep Earth Processes, Plate Tectonics, Thermal Domains, Computational Methods, etc. in a systematic and consistent format and standard. It is an authoritative and current reference source with extraordinary width of scope. It draws its unique strength from the expert contributions of editors and authors across the globe. It is designed to serve as a valuable and cherished source of information for current and future generations of professionals.

Relationships Between Coastal Sea Level and Large Scale Ocean Circulation (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Rui M. Ponte, Benoit... Relationships Between Coastal Sea Level and Large Scale Ocean Circulation (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Rui M. Ponte, Benoit Meyssignac, Catia M. Domingues, Detlef Stammer, Anny Cazenave, …
R3,263 Discovery Miles 32 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume offers a broad and comprehensive examination of observational, modeling and theoretical aspects of coastal sea level science. The collection of overview articles provides up-to-date information on the causes of coastal sea level variability and change, contributes to better understanding of the influence of large-scale climate signals and open ocean processes on the coast, and addresses effects of waves, storm surges, and tides on extreme sea level and coastal flooding. Projections of long-term coastal changes and associated uncertainties are also proposed. The volume contributes to better identifying priorities for the development of an optimal and integrated (satellite and ground-based) coastal observing system and highlights present modeling and observing challenges for monitoring and predicting coastal sea level on daily to multi-decadal time scales. Previously published in Surveys in Geophysics, Volume 40, Issue 6, 2019 The chapters "Concepts and Terminology for Sea Level: Mean, Variability and Change, Both Local and Global", "Forcing Factors Affecting Sea Level Changes at the Coast", "Sea Level and the Role of Coastal Trapped Waves in Mediating the Influence of the Open Ocean on the Coast", "Impacts of Basin-Scale Climate Modes on Coastal Sea Level: a Review", "Interactions Between Mean Sea Level, Tide, Surge, Waves and Flooding: Mechanisms and Contributions to Sea Level Variations at the Coast", "Uncertainties in Long-Term Twenty-First Century Process-Based Coastal Sea-Level Projections" and "Probabilistic Sea Level Projections at the Coast by 2100" are available as open access articles under a CC BY 4.0 license at link.springer.com

Earth Rotation: Solved and Unsolved Problems (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1986): Anny Cazenave Earth Rotation: Solved and Unsolved Problems (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1986)
Anny Cazenave
R5,775 Discovery Miles 57 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The idea for organl.zl.ng an Advanced Research Workshop entirely devoted to the Earth rotation was born in 1983 when Professor Raymond Hide suggested this topic to the special NATO panel of global transport mechanism in the Geosciences. Such a specialized meeting did not take place since the GEOP research conference on the rotation of the Earth and polar motion which was held at the Ohio State University (USA) in 1973. In the last ten years, highly precise measurements of the Earth's rotation parameters and new global geophysical data have become available allowing major advance to be made in the under standing of the various irregularities affecting the Earth's rotation. The aim of the workshop was to bring together scientists who have made important contributions in this field during the last decade both at the observational and geophysical interpretation levels. The confe rence was divided into four main topics. The first session was dedicated to the definition, implementation and maintenance of the terrestrial and celestial reference systems. A few critical points have been identified as requiring further improvements: (i) appro priate selection of terrestrial sites recognized for their long term stability, (ii) determination of the relationship between terrestrial and celestial references systems as well as between the various terrestrial ones, (iii) improvment of the theory of a rotating elastic earth (the recently adopted theory needs already some corrections')."

R2,499 Discovery Miles 24 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Sentinel missions of the COPERNICUS Programme of the European Union, as well as other Earth Observation missions, provide new opportunities for systematic monitoring of natural and man-made hazards and disasters that can highly impact human societies. The contributions collected in this book address a broad range of geohazards observable from space, including earthquakes, volcanic hazards, extreme events (e.g. storm surges, floods and droughts), fires, pollution, tipping points in physical and biological systems, etc.. They provide information on how space observations can improve our understanding of the driving mechanisms at the origin of such geohazards, and of their mutual interactions. Focus is given on the expected added-value information obtained by combining different types of space-based and in situ observations as well as model results. The chapters "Space-Based Earth Observations for Disaster Risk Management", "Earth Observation for the Assessment of Earthquake Hazard, Risk and Disaster Management", "Earth Observation for Crustal Tectonics and Earthquake Hazards", "Earth Observations for Monitoring Marine Coastal Hazards and Their Drivers", "Air Pollution and Sea Pollution Seen from Space" are available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.
